Research: Film Genre Results Analysis

1.

I chose to ask this particular question to my audience so that I could establish what conventions they think a psycological thriller should have. The results proved that s complex plot line is more important than the use of special effects (e.g darkness) and this is because clearly a psycological thriller is based on the effects on the mind, and without it the film wouldnt have any substance. This particular question enabled me to establish what the plot line for my teaser trailer should be, and how complex it may be.

2.

This question provided me with knowledge about who I should use in my teaser trailer. Adults are clearly more popular according to my research. It is also interesting that some of my audience spoke about including children in a psycological thriller. I am not sure why this is, but using a child could possibly create more impact in the plot, has a child has connotations of innonce, and shouldnt be surronded by violence and death.

3.

This result showed where audiences expect a psychological thriller to be based. It was interesting that many of the people of who I asked considered a deserted mansion to be a good place to shoot this trailer. If I were to choose this location I would have to consider how and were I could find a big empty house and whether or not it was easy to get too. A forest also seemed another popular choice, and I think this is a stereotypical setting for a thriller, such as twilight. I would have to carefully consider both of these locations.

4.

I asked this question so it could provide me with ideas about what I want to have in a plot. I liked the fact that the people I asked liked a plot to have a twist, and also know that using a twist could also make my film sucessful. The new Harry Potter film called "Deathly Hallows Part Two" makes use of a twist to shock audiences and it is also quite enigmatic. I could use a twist in my psychological thriller.
One person chose that having a range of characters of different ages is what they prefer to have in a plot. It is possible that they also answered children for question number two also. I could possibly incorporate using children in my trailer if I really wanted too, as it could make it more shocking because they are still innocent and shouldnt be forced to watch horrific events unfold ( such as walking in on someone hanging.)

5.

I asked this question purely to gage the level of interest in the genre that I have chosen. 7 people said maybe, which shows that a trailer needs to have good conventions to appeal to viewers.

6.

This results show that people prefer a complex narrative rather than a straightforward narrative overall. These people are the target audience for my trailer as my plotline is quite complex and may involve a twist. The other for people may be interested in the action genre so may not go and see my film/trailer if it was advertised on national television or in other forms of media.

7.

These results helped me because it enabled me to understand that the psycological thriller genre has viewers of a young age range and people are interested in it. It also highlights how often they watch that specific type of film and could also help market the film as to how often they should advertise it daily, weekly or even monthly.

8. I asked this question because it is one way that the profits from the release of the film could be increased.
It is clear that Dvds are essential merchandize to sell after a film is released. Dvd sales help to further fund new films. The Wanted Film starring Angelina Jolie made a total of $66,684,752 from Dvd sales from 2008 to 2009, which highlights that Dvds can still make a film immensely profitable, and that they are still popular in this current online market of 2011
